Gender stereotypes. A comparison between Russia and Colombia

In Colombia, gender roles have been established for a long time. We are a country that, despite efforts to adapt to modernity, is still very conservative in terms of what a man or woman «can and should do» so that society sees it well. This shows us that we live in a society that, at least in the social aspect, is deeply sexist. In that sense we are very similar to Russia, because it is a country whose people are mostly traditional and sexist. This is why we can say that the role of women in society is similar in both countries, as women are seen as helpless beings in need of protection. This is reflected in the survey made by the Russian newspaper «The Moscow Times» in which a survey was made to men and women to define what a man looks for in a woman and vice versa, the results obtained state that the vast majority of Russian men value a woman who is a good housewife more than one who is a professional.

Another famous stereotype in Russian culture is that most women are very vain and obsessed with the world of fashion. When comparing this with the reality of Colombian women we find a difference, because although they also like to be always in fashion, they do not see it (at least most of them) as a priority or as something essential in their lives.

If we think about the role of men in society, we find that a similarity with respect to Colombian men is that the traditional way of enjoying with friends is by drinking alcohol together. On the other hand, in Colombia men in general are very fanatic about football, which is also the case with Russian men, with football, ice hockey and rugby being the most popular sports in Russia.
